What lead you to become a Nail Tech?

Becoming a nail tech was never something I thought of getting into when I was younger. After high school, I attended college and received my Business Administration Diploma majoring in Accounting.  My plan was to then go to University to get my CA designation. I did a work experience program at an accounting firm and I quickly realized that my personality did not fit with that career.  I had started getting my nails done in 1992 and there was something about it that peaked my interest.  I’ve always been an artistic person as well so I decided to take a nail course and try it on the side. Within 3 years, I had developed a full clientele and quit my full-time job as Inventory Auditor with Costco. It was initially scary but I’m very happy I did it!  I haven’t looked back. 😊

If you could do any other career, what would you do?

I would be a practical/spiritual life coach & a motivational speaker.  It’s currently something I do in my job on a daily basis. I have had many clients tell me that they feel better after seeing me and that I have inspired them to make positive changes in their lives. Another rewarding element in my career.

What do you enjoy most about being a Educator for Fuzion?

I am fairly new, of course, but I can say that joining the Fuzion team was the best decision I’ve made. I’ve had many years of experience teaching for a few other companies (15 years) and I can honestly say that there is a different feel with this company. I feel there is appreciation, compassion  and compensation that is more than generous. Educating new techs is very rewarding. I love to see the new, fresh passion that students show.

Who inspires you and why?

Someone like Cheryl inspires me. Knowing the trials and tribulations she has had to go through to get to where she is, is inspiring. She has shown that you can be knocked down to the lowest point but you can still achieve your goals and come out on top.  I am so proud of what she has accomplished and I am very happy for her. I’m honoured to be working alongside someone like her.

What is your ideal work environment?

I do enjoy working in my shop solo. I have had many girls working for me at one time and, as I get older, I realize that I prefer to not have employees that I need to look after. When it comes to the educating side of things, I enjoy my one-on-one time with my student but I also like to be in a classroom environment once in awhile to teach a group of gals.

What’s your philosophy towards your work?

I love my work. I love everything about it. I believe that when you love what you do, you will put more in than the time required, you will be happier in your life & you will never hate to get up in the morning to go to work. And……in order to grow, you must continue to learn.  Never stop learning!!!

Proudest career moment?

Making the decision to quit my secure Costco job for a full-time career in Nails. Haven’t regretted that decision for 1 second!!!

A sentence or quote that best describes you?

Life happens for you and not to you.  There are no mistakes…only life experiences.
These quotes represent my outlook on life. I do not hold grudges and I feel compassion for everyone no matter what they may have done to me. Focusing on the positives allows you to live a happier, stress free life.

What does being a role model mean to you?

It means being aware of your own actions and knowing that someone is looking up to you. It’s about allowing them to make mistakes so that they can learn to pick themselves up again. Being a role model isn’t about coddling or enabling but giving guidance based on your knowledge and experience. Always being there to offer advice when asked in a positive manner.

What advice would you give your 10 year old self?

You are going to experience things in your life that are going to seem like life is unfair. You have to know that you will be okay. Experiences build character but don’t allow some of the negative experiences to make you a bitter person. There will be a lot of wonderful things happen in your life too and those are the things that should receive the most thought and attention. Sometimes we tend to focus so heavily on the negative things which is a shame because those things rob us of contentment. Make good choices, be loyal, trustworthy and honest and you will be able to walk through life with your head held high. There will be people along your journey that will be threatened by you and they will try and knock you down because of their own insecurities. You be strong in your beliefs and don’t let anybody knock you down and you will get your revenge through success!
